Brooklands Museum has over 800 volunteers, yet it has no purpose-built workshop space for the Museum’s restoration and conservation projects, with volunteers sometimes working outside.
Across the industrial heritage sector, many volunteers with vital restoration and conservation skills are nearing retirement age.
We need to train a new generation of volunteers to maintain and care for the nation’s heritage collections.
The new two-storey ‘Flight Shed’ will address the space issue with workshops and a storage facility located on the lower floor.
Volunteer Heritage Skills Training will be offered for approximately 30 volunteers per year in aircraft conservation and restoration skills, creating a new generation of volunteers with knowledge to conserve and maintain the collection. It will also provide a new generation of skilled volunteers for other museums as well as Brooklands.
